No Kidding Campers Head to London

The American Shakespeare Center's annual No Kidding Shakespeare Camp, a program for adults only (no kid-ding, you see), will be going on the road for its 2013 iteration—all the way to London, England.

The Staunton, Va., theater company has been offering the camp for parents, teachers, scholars, students, and other Shakespeare enthusiasts since 2010. This is the first year the No Kidding Camp will be traveling.

Running from July 27–Aug. 3, the program will focus on Shakespeare's London and the theatrical amenities of the modern city. Locations for lectures, workshops, and activities will include the Globe Theatre, Bloomsbury, Covent Garden, Regent's Park, St. Paul's Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of London, the British Museum, the Inns of Court, and many other historical sites, plus a day trip to Oxford.

The camp and itinerary draws on the experiences of ASC's co-founder and Director of Mission Ralph Alan Cohen's leading James Madison University's International Studies Program on similar trips for many years. In London, he will be supplemented by members of the Shakespeare Globe's education staff and archaeologists from the Museum of London.

Cost is $2,750 for eight days of camp, including lodging. Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements to and from London. All participants must register and pay in full by June 14, 2013. For an additional cost, campers may choose to continue on through Aug. 7, traveling with ASC staff north to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival.

Successful participation in the camp will yield approximately 45–50 hours of Professional Development points towards re-certification for teachers.

Additionally in 2013, ASC is expanding its Summer Teacher Seminar to a three-day adventure in the mechanics of putting together a play in the classroom. From cutting, doubling, and casting to costume considerations and the language work that forms the basis of all of ASC productions, the seminar will walk teachers through techniques to get Shakespeare's plays up on their feet and in their students' bodies.
