Friday Shakespeare Salons Get Inside Plays

Shakespeare Theatre Company logoThe Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) in Washington, D.C., is offering a series of Friday afternoon seminars providing audiences behind-the-scene insights to several of the company's plays during the 2016–2017 season.

Shakespeare Salons provide theater novices and experts alike a new perspective on STC shows, going behind the scenes and inside the text with STC's audience enrichment manager and special guests, including the people behind each production.

Salons for the current production of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will run through Oct 28 Sessions and will include backstage visits, exploration of Shakespeare's language, and seminar-style conversation about the play's themes and questions.
The Secret Garden Salon will be a three-week seminar, Dec. 2–16, delving into the structure of the musical, Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel, and making theater for family audiences. Tuition is $150.

King Charles III Salon will also be a three-week seminar, Dec. 2–16, covering contemporary verse, British history, and the complications and excitement of building a production that crosses the country. Tuition is $150.

The Select (The Sun Also Rises) Salon for adults, March 17–31, will explore Ernest Hemingway's modern novel, the art of adapting a novel for the stage, and the work of Elevator Repair Service, the show's producers. Tuition is $150.

The Macbeth Salon goes five weeks, May 12–July 9, and looks at Shakespearian tragedy, the complexities of the Macbeths, and Liesl Tommy's approach to the play. Tuition is $250.
